About this place
Tengu Dai Hall Ueno Ekimae-ten keeps things approachable, bridging casual tavern appetizers with hearty, diner-style comfort cooking. The standout centerpiece is the plump shrimp fried rice, piled high with peppery prawns whose firm snap contrasts with fragrant, wok-charred rice. It shares top billing with salmon roe fried rice and nostalgic Napolitan spaghetti, offering plenty of substance for diners visiting primarily for an evening meal.
For lingering over drinks, smaller bites make sharing simple. Spiced chicken thigh skewers and soft scrambled eggs with green chili pepper provide a lively piquancy, while bite-sized diced steak drizzled with garlic soy sauce, thin-skinned pan-fried gyoza, and freshly sliced prosciutto let guests build a diverse, crowd-pleasing spread across the table.
The beverage lineup leans playful, headlined by the Tower Lemon Sour—anchored by stacked frozen lemon wheels—and shochu infused in-house with coffee beans. Dessert borrows from retro kissaten tearooms, rounding out the evening with the cream-draped "Flood Tiramisu" or vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate sauce that quickly freezes into a crisp shell.
Perched on the 4th floor of FUNDES Ueno right by Ueno Station, the entirely non-smoking interior accommodates both counter guests and cushioned booths. The restaurant opens in the late afternoon on weekdays and runs straight through from midday on weekends and public holidays, suiting an after-work pint just as easily as an early weekend toast.
